How do you tell a chanterelle from a jack-o'-lantern mushroom?
The decisive difference is the underside. A chanterelle has blunt, shallow ridges that look folded or wrinkled, while a jack-o'-lantern has true, knife-edge gills. Chanterelles also tend to smell fruity and grow singly or in loose groups, while jack-o'-lantern mushrooms commonly form dense clusters from buried wood. Because jack-o'-lanterns are poisonous, the correct field rule is to reject any orange mushroom if the underside is not obviously blunt-ridged.
